…And We’re Back!

Ξ May 13th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Life Skills |

Sorry about that week-long detour, but I just wanted to push the new project I’m a part of, over at the Moncton IT Alliance. Head on over, have a look, there are some really neat things there.

So anyway, now that I’m back, I think I’m going to get down to actually blogging on a regular basis. I’ve tried to get myself to do it before, but I always get distracted. No more! I will stay on track!

Now, I have a few ideas of what I’m going to do to stay on track. From podcast suggestions, to food and drink reviews, I think it’s about time I try some new things. I’m going to actually open up comments again (it’s been a while), so if you’re lurking and reading this, please go ahead and comment!

In the meantime, go check out Gary Vaynerchuk at Wine Library TV. Absolutely insane, high-energy guy, and it’s a fascinating show.

Dirty Politics in Riverview

Ξ April 23rd, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Politics |

I’ve been hearing some rumblings already in the council election in Riverview. It looks like a particular candidate who’s running to be re-elected in Ward 4 has decided that property rights laws don’t apply to him!

Seems like there have been multiple cases of this candidate coming onto private property to put his signs in front of people’s houses without asking permission, or even contacting them afterwards to follow up. Simply sticking them in the ground, and moving along.

Not only that, but he seems to have even stooped to placing one of his signs on the lawn of a rival candidate! Sounds like dirty politics to me.

Now, in full disclosure, I do have a family member running for office in Riverview, however that does not change my opinion on this matter. Not only is it impolite and in bad form to put a sign on someone’s property without at least speaking with them, it most definitely is breaking the law.

To those politicians and hopefuls who take public office lightly, I have one warning: be careful, you’re in the spotlight more than you may think.

Speed Limit Increased in Riverview

Ξ April 15th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ News |

The so-called “ring road” in Riverview, which comes up from the new bridge, around to connect at Pine Glen Road, has been a bit of a sore-spot for many. Especially for our heavy-footed friends. This long, straight road, with no connecting roads or properties, was initially set at 50km/h speed limit.

The good news, however, is that, as of last night’s council meeting in Riverview, the speed limit has been changed to 70km/h! You know what that means, right? That’s 20km/h less that you’ll get ticketed for when you “swear you didn’t think you were going more than 75.”

On Living for Goals

Ξ March 31st, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Life Skills |

I’ve made a decision recently to be more goal-oriented in my life. This has, in short order, changed my outlook greatly. To say the very least, it’s made the last couple weeks very interesting. But I may be getting ahead of myself.

I realized that I’ve been living more or less by the seat of my pants for quite some time. Now, those pants have been very comfortable, and there hasn’t been a large area for massive failure, but the facts remain. I haven’t really been living my life for any particular period of time.

Now, I won’t say that I’ve been doing poorly. I have a comfortable job, a comfortable place to live, comfortable eating habits, comfortable outlook on my life…but therein lies the problem. Comfortable keeps you in one place, and that is certainly not as fun as it could be.

I’ve decided that I want to live live to be exciting. Exhuberant, even! I want to live for now, instead of simply living.

And so, I am.

After hitting this point, I decided to do something about it. I looked around me, and looked at those I see as being in constant motion, for better or for worse. One thing I’ve found that most of these people have in common is goals. An idea of the direction they’re headed in, and a clear resolve of acting to get there.

Even more than this, the better of them, I’ve found, have granular control of these goals. Not simply “I want to lose 20 lbs”, but goals such as “I want to bring lunch every day this week” or “I want to go jogging four times this week”. Clear, precise, and acheivable goals.

This is where I am so far. I have a resolve to create goals for myself, and to stick to them. With this, I’ve decided to gather a number of my close friends, and hold a weekly meeting for us to discuss our goals. On a weekly basis, we will be sharing with eachother how we did on the previous week’s goals, and what our goals are for the coming week. Through this, we can help keep each other on track and honest.

Now, I realize that this post is very poorly written, not entirely coherent in its thought pattern, but I guess you could say I’m writing on energy and excitement alone. This is because these changes, which I’ve only started applying to my life in the last 1-2 weeks, have already shown changes. I feel amazing! I’m already finding myself better able to deal with things, and more able to be productive.

And so, I hope you’ll join me as I update about my goals here, about my thoughts and my projects. I’m creating something great, and I call it my life,

Huckabee vs Paul, or Huckabee AND Paul?

Ξ February 6th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Freedom, Politics |

Huckabee has been on the verge of going broke for a month or so now…he’s getting votes, but no donations. After Super Tuesday, he’s sitting with 169 delegates, which isn’t too shabby, especially when you consider that around half of the delegates are still up for grabs.

He’s got a close (at least business) relationship with Stephen Colbert, since he’s done lots of stuff for the Colbert Report as gags and such. All in good fun, but it’s also, obviously, a part of his campaign strategy.

Colbert, last week, gave a tongue-in-cheek endorsement of sorts to Ron Paul, saying that he’s crazy in his opinions on the war. He continued to say that it’s as crazy as saying that Japan was going to attack the US in 1941; as crazy as saying that a hydrogen filled blimp can burn; as crazy as saying the earth goes around the sun.

Ron Paul has very similar values to Huckabee, he’s just more intelligent and consistent. By this, I mean they both are personally against abortion, against leaving the borders wide open, both are Christian conservatives.

Ron Paul also has a LOT of money

I can see one of two scenarios happening.

1) Huckabee drops out for lack of money and gives Ron Paul all his delegates; they’ve already worked together in West Virginia, and Huckabee gave Ron Paul three of his delegates.

2) Ron Paul drops out and becomes Huckabee’s running mate

McCain is a crazy war-monger who will never beat a Democrat. Romney will never win because he’s a Mormon, as much as religion shouldn’t matter. But Huckabee, while he is an idiot, isn’t completely a lost cause.

I see the second as being more likely; and as much as the fanatics probably don’t see it, having Ron Paul in the White House as VP would be a huge step forward for liberty. This opens the door for more steps in the future. President or not, the White House itself is a noble goal.

So if either happens, remember, I fucking called it.

The Path to Freedom, Part I

Ξ January 15th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Freedom |

It started in about 2005. This was when I was first shown Penn & Teller’s Bullshit! Having always been amused by their style of magic, I was instantly intrigued. I started watching them, getting them where I could (it wasn’t being aired here in Canada at the time). As the seasons became available here on DVD, I purchased them.

I found myself initially at odds with quite a bit of their message. Being a self-described Canadian socialist, I had a hard time understanding some of it. But it was so amusing, and so funny, that I couldn’t stop watching.

I don’t know when it happened, or how, but I suddenly found myself agreeing with them on more things. Then, most things. Next I knew it, I found myself thinking the same way about issues before I had seen the episode.

While I didn’t realize it right away, I had stopped calling myself a socialist. I stopped saying things like “communism is a great system if people would actually implement it properly.” I even started telling people that I really didn’t find myself agreeing with it anymore.

In 2006, I bought an iPod. With this, added to the fact that I was travelling a fair amount at the time, I started listening to podcasts. I found Penn Radio, a five-days-a-week radio talk show hosted by Penn Jillette. I immediately subscribed to it, and started listening every day. While it lacked the harsh language of Bullshit, it contained some even more raw messages from Penn. It was wonderful! Hilarious gags, great celebrity guests, and strong logical opinions! Then I heard him say a word I’d never heard before.

Libertarian.

Surely, this must be one of those silly American colloquialisms, right? In all my years of public schooling, and two years of post-secondary training, I’d never heard this word.

Then I learned what it meant; and that it’s antithetical to the desires of a government-run public education system…

(to be continued…)
